Smallmonuments: Bas Relief in Polymer Clay
Reliquaries

-- A "reliquary" is a type of container used in religous ceremonies to house objects of special veneration. Most often in our Western culture, these objects are body parts of various saints, bits of wood alleged to be from the "true cross," or bits of cloth supposed to be stained by the blood of martyrs. The containers are usually elaborately embellished with gold and precious gems, and in some European cities, they are carried about in ceremonial processions. Many of them have miracles associated with them.

-- It ocurred to me that each one of us has his or her own precious, even miraculous, relics carried within, and out of that notion emerged this series of sculpture: containers to protect the part of ourselves we hold most valuable and magical.
