Smallmonuments: Bas Relief in Polymer Clay
Reveries and Reflections
-- The works represented in this gallery are part of an ongoing exploration of the expressive possibilities of small-scale handheld art objects. I have become interested in the experience of art not as something to be viewed at a distance but rather something that must be encountered closely. Unlike wall-sized paintings and immense sculptural constructions, these pieces, because of their size, force the viewer to move toward them rather than step back. It is my intention that this process of diminishing the distance will enhance a more contemplative, personal sense of the self not as a detached observer but as an intimate participant.
-- Each of these small bas-relief objects is one representative of an open-ended series of castings, ready for display. The nature of the molds and materials used is such that individual variations, sometimes major or at other times subtle, will occur. In addition, varying the pigments in the casting medium and using different patinas further ensures that every piece is unique.
-- The dimensions of the pieces in this gallery are between 1 to 3 inches in width by 2 to 3 inches in height.
