Smallmonuments: Bas Relief in Polymer Clay
Reveries and Reflections
-- The works represented in this gallery are part of an ongoing exploration of the expressive possibilities of small-scale handheld art objects. I have become interested in the experience of art not as something to be viewed at a distance but rather something that must be encountered closely. Unlike wall-sized paintings and immense sculptural constructions, these pieces, because of their size, force the viewer to move toward them rather than step back. It is my intention that this process of diminishing the distance will enhance a more contemplative, personal sense of the self not as a detached observer but as an intimate participant.
-- Each object in this project is one of an open-ended series of castings. The nature of the molds used is such that individual variations, sometimes major or at other times subtle, will occur. In addition, varying the pigments in the casting medium and using different patinas further ensures that every piece is unique.
-- The dimensions of the pieces in this gallery are between 1 to 3 inches in width by 2 to 3 inches in height. Click an image above for a larger display at approximately the actual dimensions of the piece. For the Ceremonial Object Series, click the link below the image or the larger displayed image for the next image in the series.
-- Each piece comes mounted in a 5 x 7 "greeting card" format with envelope.
